Quadriceps – Vastus medialis

Origin

Intertrochanteric line, medial lip of linea aspera of femur, medial intermuscular septum of adductor magnus and adductor longus, medial supracondylar ridge

Insertion

Medial border of the patella, then by patellar ligament into tibial tuberosity, medial condyle of tibia

Actions

Extends leg, draws patella medially

Nerve

Femoral nerve (L2–L4)

Note

Although they are not anatomically separate, the lower portion of the vastus medialis is referred to as the vastus medialis obiliquus (VMO). Its action is to stabilize the patella and prevent its lateral dislocation
