Richard Utt, L.Ac. is the founder of Applied Physiology (AP), one of most important branches of Energy Kinesiology worldwide. Richard’s path to the Kinesiology arts was a result of his own life-threatening illness, which led him in 1978 to Dr. Sheldon Deal, one of the original “Dirty Dozen” Applied Kinesiology chiropractors that researched with George J. Goodheart, Jr, D.C.. Richard’s background as an engineer resulted in wanting to know why things happened in the body the way they did. Through his own study of Applied Kinesiology and Touch For Health, Richard began to find ways of working with the body that were true innovations in the field. He named his body of work Applied Physiology.
There are many things that make AP unique in the field of Energy Kinesiology. Here are just a few:
  • The concept of 7 States of Stress of a muscle.
  • The expansion of the Chinese 5 Element system to 7 Elements to better integrate the physical with the metaphysical.
  • A three dimensional approach to the body based on holographic theory. This allows the practitioner to gain information not just about a specific meridian, but how a meridian relates to each of the other meridians.
  • AP’s researched Meridian Tuning Forks for powerful sound balancing.
  • AP’s own 7 Chi Keys, a proprietary system of balancing the 7 major chakra centers using acupuncture points, tuning forks and crystals.
  • A multitude of balancing techniques based on the holographic system, as well as unique approaches to other methodologies.

Richard was known for his flamboyant presentations, wowing people at the annual Touch for Health, and later also the Energy Kinesiology Association and overseas conferences. His reputation grew worldwide, and Applied Physiology has flourished throughout Europe and in Australia and Japan. Over the years, other kinesiology modalities grew from the concepts of Applied Physiology, many of which are considered today to be on the leading edge of the field, including LEAP, SIPS, Neuroenergetic Kinesiology, and Neuro Meridian Kinestetic,  In the last decade, Richard ran into more health issues. A serious heart attack in 2000 would have taken out most people, yet he managed to survive and continue on despite a botched surgery that complicated his health for several years after. In the last years of life, he regularly fought off infections, and was told several times he would not survive more than a few more days. And yet he managed to turn around and surprise everyone. This cat had way more than 9 lives. Eventually, however, he was unable to fight off the inevitable, as his body had simply taken all it could handle. He predicted a few months ahead that he would pass in November 2011 (though being told many times by doctors he wouldn’t make it that long). The only surprise beyond that, given his on-going love of numbers and patterns that he used often in the development of his work, was that he didn’t pass on 11/11/11, missing it by 5 hours. Richard Utt originally hailed from Flint, Michigan, and later found his way to Tucson, Arizona via his Air Force duty. He settled in Tucson, and found the International Institute of Applied Physiology there.
